okay so Hair Match deservedly gets a lot of praise for being a slow closing track with stunning instrumentation and having That One Line that recontextualises the whole song but you know what also does all that? Ezekiel 7.
Like, all the way through the song, Hair Match is a very matter-of-fact, objective description of what's happening throughout and after the match, and then 'I loved you before I even ever knew what love was like' is the realisation that gives it so much more emotional weight.
And I would argue that Ezekiel does the same thing with 'I had his arms tied up behind him'. Because all the way through the song, you could interpret the narrator as being pretty callous and distanced from what they've just done. Imo 'someone will need to mop this floor for me' creates this sense of detachment, like their mind is already wandering.
But then, in that last verse, you realise that everything described since that moment in the song has been the narrator desperately trying to distract themselves. Driving for hours, injecting whatever narcotic, even turning on the radio and trying to sing along - it's all just an attempt to think about something, anything else.
Until they can't anymore. 'I had his arms tied up behind him. We were together all day.' It's so plaintive. And obviously the listener already takes seriously what's going on, it's heavily implied that a murder is committed at the beginning of the song, but it explains why we're being told this story from the perspective of the murderer. It means, as in Hair Match, that they do care and they do remember, whatever that means. And that gives what has happened this monumental weight within the narrative.
All this to say, TMG closing tracks do make me cry quite frequently.
